You’ve probably heard about the “One Big Beautiful Bill” Republicans are trying to pass. To no one’s surprise, this bill will devastate communities across this country all to the benefit of billionaires.
It’s extremely important to not fall for the Republicans' false advertising. Many of the things they say are either a misrepresentation of reality or a flat out lie. I’ve fact-checked Republican’s claims (and cited my sources!) to equip you with the facts to fight back online and/or in conversation.
What is the Republican game plan?
In reality, the data doesn’t look good for Republicans. People will lose health care and access to other critical services. I would argue it is a pretty unpopular policy when explained thoroughly…
That’s why Republicans don’t explain it clearly, and they are relying on messaging to make their bill popular ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
Republicans are masking the horrific policies in this bill by spreading misinformation and discrediting organizations that provide data, so let’s fact-check some of their advertising slogans.
Myth: Democrats want to raise your taxes.
Reality: Most of the tax cuts being debated were set to expire at the end of this year, and Republicans are trying to make them permanent. These tax cuts disproportionately benefit the wealthy, and they are coming at the cost of essential services like Medicaid and Medicare.
Myth: Republicans aren’t cutting Medicaid.
Reality: They are stripping people’s access to Medicaid in various ways. It is estimated around 10 million people will lose their healthcare by 2034. (Note: this estimate by the CBO is before the Senate introduced even more cuts to Medicaid.) One of the main ways they are stripping people of health care is that they are adding work reporting requirements. In other words, they are just adding more paperwork for people, making it harder for them to access their health care. A majority of people that use Medicaid are already working, so this is adding more bureaucracy and more paperwork for everyday people.
Myth: Republicans aren’t touching Medicare.
Reality: In the bill, they are not touching Medicare. However, the bill is going to contribute significantly to our deficit (over 2.3 trillion over 10 years) and that will result in a process called sequestration. Sequestration results in the automatic reduction of certain federal spending, so the proposed budget bill adds enough to our deficit over the next 10 years and will result in automatic cuts to Medicare funding. Separate legislation can be passed to avoid the cuts, but that means separate legislation has to pass a divided Congress and a divided Republican Party.
Myth: The Congressional Budget Office is notoriously wrong.
Reality: This is inaccurate. I cited the CBO throughout this article because they provide objective, nonpartisan information to Congress. It is important to understand that the Congressional Budget Office, in regards to this bill, provides estimates/projections. That’s why the CBO releases accuracy projections for transparency.
Now, you know their playbooks and are equipped with the facts, so it’s time to use this information and fight for a budget bill that works for ALL Americans.
How do we fight back?
Call your Senators (and if you have time call your Representative).
The bill has yet to pass the Senate, so it’s important to drive calls to their offices and tell them you do not support cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, public media and more. It will also have to pass the House again, so if you have an extra minute call your Representative!
